Property prices in Waterloo Walk, Washington, average about £16,500, according to data from the Land Registry. Many of them are currently boarded up or abandoned.

The street is made up of flats, and one landlord said: "The council now runs a scheme to vet tenants and they crack down on anti-social behaviour quite quickly.

"There are generally nice people here."

According to the figures, South Easton Place, in Belgravia, is the most expensive street in the country, with houses there selling for an average of £9.9million.
