Sunderland street brawl : '˜It was really scary, like something you would see on TV'

Eight people have now been arrested and bailed following a street disturbance which saw two people taken to hospital when they were hit by a car.

Police were called to Eden House Road, off Durham Road near Sunderland city centre, at around 4.37pm on Tuesday after reports of a group of men and women fighting.

Officers and paramedics raced to the scene and found two people, a man aged 30 and a woman aged 29, had sustained injuries in a collision with a vehicle.

The man had leg injuries and the woman facial injuries.

They were both taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital by paramedics, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators believe there may have been an earlier altercation involving the man and woman at the Bangla Town Superstore on Eden Terrace, but said they were treating it as an isolated incident.

Seven men and one woman have been arrested on suspicion of assault offences.

The men, aged from 26 to 54, were all detained in custody helping police with their inquiries.

Police confirmed a further man and woman were arrested and released on bail.

Officers have been carrying out inquiries in the area and are appealing for witnesses.

The road was closed for a short time to allow emergency services to deal with the incident.

One witness, who did not want to be named, said: “It was really scary, like something you would see on TV.

“The whole thing lasted around 20 minutes and then six police cars turned up and three ambulances.

“I saw the man being taken into one on a stretcher and the woman looked like she was in a wheelchair.”
