Sunderland star: Moyes tactics suit us but we need to help Jermain Defoe more

Didier Ndong has said that he and his team-mates need to up the ante in front of goal and take the pressure off Jermain Defoe.

Ndong scored his first Sunderland goal in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, a game in which Lamine Kone also registered his first of the season.

That set the platform for Defoe to net a superb brace, but Sunderland's inefficiency in attack returned during the 4-0 defeat to Southampton at the weekend.

Ndong had the Black Cats' only shot on target, a tame effort from distance easily gathered by Fraser Forster.

The Gabon star has said his team cannot continue to rely on Defoe to produce the good if they are to survive in the Premier League.

He told safc.com: "I think we need to score more goals as a team and not just one man,

“It needs to be collectively that we’re adding goals.

"So we have to believe in ourselves that we can do it and help the team."

Despite that disappointing result at the hands of Southampton, Ndong hailed David Moyes new 3-5-2 system and says it suits the current Black Cats squad.

Ndong said: "The manager has been trying a few things to try and get us working better tactically, with a back-three system and two wings backs for example – which has really suited us.

“We understand we have to change and that we can do better as a collective group.

"The manager has been great as well, making us believe what we are capable of on the pitch.
