Writing on our Facebook page, Anthony McGuinness said: “It’s ridiculous, businesses in Sunderland don’t help themselves and it’s no wonder a lot close down.”

Lyndsey Hamilton added: “What about when you’re on holiday and most men wear dressy shorts to go for a meal. Does it matter what he’s wearing? What if he wore a skirt?”

Colin Tosh posted: “Seaburn is not exactly the French Riviera.”

Colin Wilson asked: “Can you wear a skirt? Really outdated practice, I thought we had moved beyond judging people for their appearance. They are taking themselves far too seriously.”

Claire Smith wrote: “It’s a seafront venue, what do they expect people will be wearing, particularly if it’s good weather? Similarly, if it was a girl in hot pants, would the dress code still apply? Doubtful.”

But others had more support for the venue.

Lindsey Jones said: “It has a nationally accepted dress code for evenings, this is reflected on their website. Hilton hotels won’t let people in their restaurants wearing shorts, I’ve never seen anyone complain about that.

Peter Kirby added: “Nowt wrong with having a dress code, people in Sunderland need to get back to getting used to getting dressed when going out.”
