Sunderland jobless claimant count falls

There were 5,240 people claiming Universal Credit and Jobseeker’s Allowance – which is paid to those classed as actively looking for work – in May, a fall of 100 on June’s figure of 5,240 and down by 360 year-on-year.

Across the North East, the number of people in work stands at 1,198,000, down 5,000 on the previous quarter, but up by 19,000 over the last year.

JobCentre plus spokeswoman Jacqui Alderson said: “It is another strong set of figures all round this month.

“Employment in the region has increased by 19,000 - we have not got almost 1.2 million people in work in the North East.”

“Hospitality has been the big leader and we are also recruiting for a new contact centre in Seaham.”

North East Chamber of Commerce policy adviser Paul Carbert said: “This is a positive set of results for the North East.

“It is good news that the employment rate has increased by 19,000 over the past 12 months and the employment rate in the region remains at a record high.

“The unemployment figures are similarly moving in the right direction and the unemployment rate is at the lowest level since August 2008.

“Our members want the Government to maintain a constant focus on addressing the skills shortages in our region, and publish clear guidance on the apprenticeship levy to enable them to plan for their workforce and training needs over the coming months.”

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Stephen Crabb said: “Secure employment and a decent wage are key to transforming the life chances of people right the way across the country, so I’m delighted to see another strong set of figures this month.

“There are more people in work than ever before and wages are continuing their upward climb. There’s good news in the North East where the employment rate is at a record high of 70.5% with almost 1.2 million people in work.

“Our economic plan is delivering jobs and security right across the UK.”
