Sunderland hopes to give a Snowdog a home

City businesses are hoping to give a dog a home when the Great North Snowdogs go under the hammer.

Sunderland BID has launched a last minute appeal to raise funds to ensure the city retains one of the Great North Snowdogs from the hugely popular art trail which drew to a close a fortnight ago.

After attracting visitors to locations across the region over six weeks, the 61 dogs will be auctioned off at Sage Gateshead in aid of St Oswald’s Hospice on Tuesday.

A crowd funding campaign has been launched in the hopes of raising enough money to buy either Snowdog Down the Rabbit Hole, which was at Park Lane during the trail, or Keel Square-based Tails of the Sea.

“Sunderland has seen thousands of visitors coming to the city from people who have been involved in the Snowdogs trail,” said Gemma Dishman of Sunderland BID which is leading the initiative.

She added: “It would be a great shame for us not to keep a lasting reminder here, particularly one of the dogs that have proved so popular and have a strong historic and cultural link with Sunderland.”
