The Black Cats – whose campaign ended last week – led United by a point ahead of kick-off, but United won the first of their three remaining games, 3-2 at Tottenham.

Donald Love and Andreas Pereira had them two up, only for William Miller and Joe Pritchard to level it up.

Guillermo Varela, though, smashed home a volley from the edge of the box to give United all three points in stoppage time.

United still have games at Southampton and Chelsea to fulfil, but are on 45 points already, two better than runners-up Sunderland.
