Sunderland council worker 'could've been seriously injured' by missile thrown from bridge

A council employee was closing Roker Park and driving through to check the park and lock the gates, while he was driving under the Ravine Bridge an object was thrown from the bridge which landed on his windscreen. The impact caused the windscreen to smash. Ravine Bridge is a small white footbridge that crosses the park and goes over the path that leads down to Roker beach. The driver was not injured in the incident, which happened at 5.10pm on Wednesday, January 13, but was left shocked.Neighbourhood Sergeant Victoria Ford-Stubbs said: "The consequences of this incident could have been far worse, had the driver been hit by the glass of the windscreen he could've been seriously injured. "This type of behaviour is foolhardy and we will take necessary action against those responsible. Our enquiries are continuing and I would ask anyone who has information about the incident to contact us." Deputy Leader of Sunderland City Council and Chair of the Safer Sunderland Partnership, Councillor Harry Trueman said: “We will not tolerate any kind of criminal behaviour in any of our parks, particularly when like this it puts people in danger of serious injury and even death. “Roker Park is a much used, popular park and we would urge anyone who knows anything about this cowardly attack on a member of staff to come forward and help us identify those responsible.” Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 804 130116 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
