A new right-back is one of five priority positions for Sunderland in the transfer market this summer after the end of Spurs defender DeAndre Yedlin’s loan spell at the Stadium of Light.

With Billy Jones the only other alternative in that slot, it is an obvious area for boss Sam Allardyce to bring in reinforcements.

There have been reports in France that Sunderland are one of several clubs who have made an enquiry for Pied, who is out-of-contract at Nice this summer.

Nice want to keep hold of the 27-year-old - who is also comfortable in a wide midfield role - but they face a tough task to keep hold of the ex-France Under-21 international.

St Etienne and Bordeaux are among his French suitors, while Sunderland and West Ham have both reportedly made enquiries from the Premier League.
