The Black Cats had a representative in Vienna on Friday for the World Cup qualifier between Austria and the Republic of Ireland, a James McClean goal separating the two sides.

Defensive duo Martin Hinteregger and Aleksandar Dragovic are understood to be the targets, with both starting, while VfB Stuttgart right-back Florian Klein has also been linked.

Sunderland have been regular visitors to Austrian internationals, with three games scouted since the end of last season.

Former Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce was understood to be a fan of the centre-halves, with the club continuing to keep tabs on them under David Moyes.

Moyes will be looking to bolster his Sunderland defence when the January transfer window opens.

Sunderland could lose Lamine Kone and Papy Djilobodji for several weeks to the Africa Cup of Nations in January, while several clubs are monitoring Kone including Everton - who tabled an £18million offer in the summer - and West Ham United.
