Sunderland have been handed a major boost with news Duncan Watmore is ahead of schedule in his return from injury.

The Sunderland forward suffered ankle ligament damage during January’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool, which was originally expected to result in a three-month lay-off – leaving him facing an uphill battle to feature again for the Black Cats during the survival battle.

But Watmore is understood to have slashed a fortnight off that estimate and resumed running at the Academy of Light last week.

And he could be back for the final five games of the campaign.

Spurs are battling it out with Leicester City at the top of the league.

"Leicester are a great team. What they've done there this year is an unbelievable story," Defoe told the club website.

"But I'd like to win that game - and then at the end of the season we're safe and Tottenham win the league."

Spurs trail Claudio Ranieri's side by five points.
