ROBBIN RUITER

Helpless with the second and third goals but ought to have done far, far better with the first. The long-range shot from Ameobi took no deflection and did not have a great deal of pace. 4

ADAM MATTHEWS

Looks a better option that Jones defensively but another game forward and Grayson is no closer to knowing his best defence. 5

MARC WILSON

Returned to the side ahead of Lamine Kone but offered no great presence. Sunderland defensively continue to flounder. 4

JOHN O'SHEA

Partnership with international team-mate failed to bring much more stability to a defence that never convinced in dealing with Bolton's direct approach. 5

BRYAN OVIEDO

Again one of the few to emerge with credit. Defensively resolute enough and fine composure to tee Grabban up for what ought to have been the winner. 6

DIDIER NDONG

A fine assist for Grabban's first but the error that saw Bolton score a third was equally poor. Did well to track back and recover the ball but surrendered it far too easily, under hitting the pass to Ruiter. Passing generally was poor. 4

DARRON GIBSON (McNair, 75)

One excellent long range pass into the channel but otherwise ineffectual and did not offer particularly strong protection to his back four. 4

CALLUM McMANAMAN (Watmore, 60)

Started brightly and felt he should have had a penalty after getting past Antonee Robinson in the box. Faded from there and could have no qualms about being replaced on the hour. 5

JONNY WILLIAMS (Vaughan, 45)

Looked off the pace in the first half and was replaced by James Vaughan as Grayson gambled on two up front. Not having the same impact as in his early appearances. 5

AIDEN McGEADY

Frustrated that so few seemed to be attacking his set-pieces but a long way from his best in open play. 4

LEWIS GRABBAN

Can do little more. Again showed the composure and movement required to hurt defenders at this level. A lifeline going forward. 8

Sunderland looked better for his presence up front. Felt he should have had a penalty when pulled back by Beevers. 6

DUNCAN WATMORE

Made a real difference with his running and energy, setting up McNair for the equaliser. 7

PADDY McNAIR

A superb finish to bring the scores level and brought a touch more purpose to the midfield. 7
