Students pick up Hetton Honours at special assemblies

Pupils have been honoured for going the extra mile in a number of areas of school and community life.

Keith Magee, deputy head of Year 10 and student personal development officer at Hetton School, said the students have been delighted to pick up their awards under the Hetton Honours scheme.

He said the most recent celebration was to mark the success of Year 7-10 pupils who had successfully completed their bronze, silver or gold Hetton Honours Award.

A total of 39 students completed their bronze award, 41 silver, and six of the pupils scooped gold.

Mr Magee said: “All students were awarded their certificates and pin badges in two very positive assemblies.

“The students that have completed their gold award deserve a very special mention as they have taken advantage of a range of opportunities in extra-curricular life at school.

“This is an outstanding achievement and shows a great desire to stand out from the crowd.”

He said the Hetton Honours scheme encourages the North Road school’s students to take advantage of the many extra-curricular activities that are on offer through the school.

They must gather evidence of how they have completed each of the seven sections of the award, RESPECT, Responsibility, Extra-curricular, School support, Peer support, Environmental, Community and school Trip.

Mr Magee said: “We were delighted to welcome our chairman of governors, Margaret Young, and Phil Keay, the headteacher, to the assemblies.

“Mr Keay congratulated all of the students that have completed their awards and highlighted how important it is for students to take part in wider school life.

“Getting into college, university and finding a job is becoming increasingly competitive and by completing their Hetton Honours, these students are putting themselves into a fantastic position to succeed in life after school.

“Well done to all involved.”

The Hetton Honours scheme has been running successfully for a number of years, benefitting both the students at the school and the wider community.

There is also a Junior Honours scheme, which runs with feeder primary schools, so new Year 7s know all about it.
