Street attacker admits leaving Nissan worker in coma with one brutal blow

Steve Willey almost died after being knocked unconscious by a stranger while waiting at a bus stop in Newcastle with his wife on December 23.

The 46-year-old Nissan worker suffered a serious bleed on the brain and his devoted family were warned there was a chance he may not survive.

Almost two months later, Mr Willey, who lives in Washington, remains in a coma and his future prognosis is still unclear.

At Newcastle Crown Court Nicholas Graham, 26, of Belsay Gardens, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw told the court: "The complainant is still in a coma, with little signs of him recovering from that in the immediate future."

Mr Wardlaw said it was accepted by the prosecution the case concerns a "one punch assault."

Mr Recoder Richard Woolfall adjourned the cast until March 17 and Graham, who appeared at the hearing via videolink to HMP Durham, was remanded in custody.

The judge ordered up to date medical reports on Mr Willey's condition. Victim impact statements from Mr Willey's family may be read at the

sentencing hearing.

The judge warned Graham he should prepare himself for a "considerable" custodial sentence.
