The Sunderland striker had been recalled by boss Gareth Southgate after four years in the international wilderness.

However, Jamie Vardy started the game and when he was replaced, Marcus Rashford came off the substitutes’ bench, leaving Defoe kicking his heels as Germany won thanks to Lukas Podolski’s stunner.

Here’s what fans said on Twitter to the snub.

@ItsHenry3Lions: So England fans best in the world!! And Southgate has no brain....Where was Defoe. Germany looked very poor. #3Lions

@travisgrimmond_: If Gareth Southgate doesn’t play Jermain Defoe in the next friendly, it’ll be so bad for him after all the publicity.

@walice46: England beat 1-0. Englands best striker left on bench. Give Defoe a chance.

@the_fatman61: Why didn’t Defoe get a sniff last night?

@ritualsspursma1: @England Defoe should have played ahead of Vardy

@johnthemakem: tippy tappy football Defoe would’ve made mice meat of the German defence why have him in the squad and not play him.

@thetateyman: We needed to take our chances. But you leave the top scoring English men on the bench. Good one Southgate #Defoe @IamJermainDefoe #safc

@NeilMcDermott07: Good hit podolski. Eng didn’t have anyone on pitch who could score from there. Barkley and Defoe on bench tho. Not much use there.

@Distillerymad: If any of those three clear cut chances fall to Jermain Defoe tonight he puts in two at least mind blowing not giving him a run out.

@AttackingCB: We already know what Defoe can do. If we need a goal on Sunday, he should get his chance.

@SAFCmal: Fact – less than a week ago Gareth Southgate said he couldn’t ignore Jermaine Defoe. Well he managed to tonight. #safc
