Southbound A19 closure after fears for woman's safety

The A19 was partially closed early today amid fears for a woman’s safety.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 6.40am we received a report of a woman in distress who was on the wrong side of the railings of a bridge over the A19 on the southern approach to the Tyne Tunnel in Jarrow.

"Emergency services attended and the A19 southbound carriageway was closed as officers spoke with the woman in question.

"Just after 7.15am she was brought to safety and the A19 was re-opened.”
