It was smiles all round at Sunderland's Grindon Hall Christian School as youngsters collected their GCSEs.

The Nookside school was delighted with another set of good GCSE results.

Among the top performing students was 16-year-old Craig Chiremba.

Hard work and dedication paid off for the lad who scooped a raft of outstanding results, with an A*, a distinction, two 9s, five 8s and two 7s.

Under the new system the grade 9s are reserved only for the students who demonstrate exceptional performance, higher than that required to achieve the former A* grade.

Delighted with his results, Craig, is planning to join St Robert of Newminster's sixth form to study A-levels and then hopes to go into the field of engineering in the future.

He said: "I am very happy with the results."

Fellow student, Kate Elliott, 16, is planning to join Durham Sixth Form College to do A-levels after clinching a range of good grades, which included three 8s, four 7s and two 6s.

The Hall Farm teenager said she is thrilled with her grades.

She said: "I am so pleased. I couldn't sleep last night it was about 3am before I got to sleep, I was so nervous."

Grindon Hall pupil, Adam Stockton, triumphed with two As, an A*, two 7s, two 6s and one 5.

And, Ellie Hunter, 16, got an A*, three 7s, three 6s and two 5s, and is going off to Durham Sixth Form College to study A-levels in law, history and business.

Principal Joanne Maw, said: "These results represent the tremendous dedication and hard work of our students, their teachers and exceptional support from parents.

"We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made and we wish them every possible future success.

"There were some really happy students this morning."
