There will be kite-seeing along with sight-seeing as Souter Lighthouse, in Whitburn, plays host to a weekend of high-flying fun.

The National Trust team based at the iconic visitor attraction will be welcoming the North East Kite Fliers (NEFK) for the return of the hit Kites over Souter on Saturday and Sunday.

The NEFK will be wowing onlookers with a dazzling display of kite-flying skills - as well as offering visitors to try their hand at the popular pastime themselves.

The skies above the lighthouse and the picturesque Leas will be filled with colour as a rich array of eye-catching crafts ascend to the clouds from 10am until 5pm on both days.

The only way is up for the two-day extravaganza with a bumper crowd of experts and newcomers alike set to flock to the borough amenity and turn Souter Lighthouse into a ‘kite house’ for one weekend only.

Vicki Johnson, National Trust Visitor Welcome Manager at Souter Lighthouse said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming kite enthusiasts from far and wide back to Souter.

“The event creates a great festival atmosphere. There’s something for everyone, whether you want to relax and watch some aerial acrobatics or get involved and pick up expert tips on flying your own kite.

“Souter and The Leas provides the perfect venue, with a sea breeze almost always guaranteed.”

The North East Kite Fliers is an open group whose main aim is to promote the hobby and sport of kite building and kite flying in the North East of England.

They attend events throughout the summer to demonstrate their kites and flying abilities, welcoming interest from everyone, regardless of age or experience.
