Karate students Daniel Colliert and Jonathan Collier both passed two grades at a recent Northern Karate Association grading '“ first time twins have passed two gradings together. Jacob Ayre also passed two grades on the same day. A fantastic day for Ryhope Karate Club. Mark, chief instructor, was delighted with all the students who took part and is aiming for continued success this year. The club meets at Ryhope Community Centre on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5.15pm-6.15pm. New starters are always welcome. Call in for more information or contact Mark on 07508318738.

Are you or somebody you know at a loose end? Why not pop along to the Men’s Den? This is a new friendship club aimed at men only. The free session will be held on a Thursday from 10am-noon starting this week. Members will meet in Ryhope Community Centre. There will be dominoes, cards, crosswords and an opportunity to meet other people in the area. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available. Congratulations to Evie Finnagan, a pupil from St Paul’s C of E School in Ryhope. She has won the Invent a Sausage competition, which involved hundreds of infant and primary school children from across the North East. She created The Pizza Sausage recipe consisting of pork, tomato, cheese, ham and sweetcorn. The winning sausage will be made by Freemans Catering Butchers, served for lunch at her school, and taken home for her family to enjoy. The butcher is also donating £300 to the school funds.

Everyone Active now manages leisure facilities in Sunderland on behalf of Sunderland City Council. Sunderland Park Run is a 5km run – you against the clock every Saturday at 9am at Silksworth Sports Complex. It’s free to take part but register before your first run by visisting www.parkrun.org.uk/sunderland. Go along and join in whatever your pace.

Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope is one of the premier ski/snowboard centres in the country. Learners as young as four years old can take to the snow with two nursery slopes for little ones. Highly qualified instructors will help all ages and abilities progress through the snow sport development pathway. Silksworth IM Church has welcomed in the new year by having the church hall decorated and is now ready for another year of service to the church family and the village community. Many group activities take place during the week including: New You Group, Sisterhood, Christian Endeavour, Stay ‘n’ Play @ Church, mothers and toddlers, and Detonate Youth Club for junior school aged children. The IM church leaders would like to thank everyone who helped knit the 119 angels which were distributed from the church at Christmas. They were very gratefully received by 50 families from Fun Club, Stay ‘n’ Play and Detonate and to 69 elderly households as part of the Christmas gifts the children took around the village. They would also like to say a big thank you to everyone who generously donated a toy towards the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal for local needy children when they attended the community carol service.

St Benedict Hospice has recently opened a great quality used furniture store in Ryhope (next to Asda) where you can grab bargains for the entire home. There is a wide range of furnishings available along with bric-a-brac and other homewares. They welcome donations of good quality items and collection can be arranged if necessary.
