Silksworth Royal British Legion members Bob Newton and Bob Fowler would sincerely like to thank the following organisations and members of the public for the fantastic response to their 2015 Poppy Appeal.Sainsburys, Morrisions and Asda supermarkets, Sunderland Royal Hospital, Barclays Bank Doxford International, all Schools, pubs,and clubs. The community generosity has so far raised about £31,000.

Ryhope Heritage Group will meet on Tuesday, February 9, in Ryhope Community Centre at 1.30pm.Guest speaker Ron Lawson will give a talk on Bridges of the Wear. New members are welcome.

North Street Methodist Church Silksworth is having a pie and peas supper with entertainment on Monday, February 8, at 7.30pm. Telephone 521 1196 for tickets at £1.50 each. All are welcome

A free craft session for children will be held in Ryhope Library during half-term on Tuesday, February 16, from 2pm to 3pm. Celebrate Chinese New Year and decorate a stained glass monkey. Suitable for all ages but children under eight years old must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, contact Ryhope Library on 561 4444 or Central Library on561 1235.

Silksworth IM Church, holds many weekly activities, including Tuesday 3.30pm Stay’n’Play@Church, Wednesday 6pm Detonate (youth group for junior school children; Sunday service 10.30am including fun club for children followed by tea, coffee and a natter. The coffee morning will be held on Saturday, February 13 will have a Valentine theme. All are welcome. The next Compton Organ Concert in Ryhope Community Centre will be on Sunday, February 21, with Christian Cartwright at the console. Christian had an interest in electronic organs from a very early age. He was stimulated by a visit to the famous Blackpool Tower to hear the mighty Wurlitzer organ there. This in turn encouraged his enthusiasm for theatre organs. He developed a strong and individual playing style, and is a popular console performer up and down the country, and has played in the USA too. Not only is he an accomplished player but has a keen interest in the intricate side of organ restoration. Together with his brother, he is presently restoring and renovating a Christie cinema organ. An exciting programme of music is in store for all tastes. Doors open at 2pm with a prompt start at 2.30pm

St Benedict’s Hospice has a fabulous bistro café and gift shop where you can enjoy a range of coffees and other refreshments along with a tasty snack. The bistro café is open to the public so if you are passing please pop in.
