Silksworth and Ryhope - Down Your Way

A ceilidh will be held in Ryhope Workingmen's Club this Friday, from 7pm to 11pm, in aid of Kidney Research. Refreshments and raffle will be available. Entry is £5, pay at the door.

St Paul’s Church, Ryhope, is holding a Macmillan Coffee Morning this Saturday from 11am. All are welcome.

The next Ryhope Heritage Group meeting will be on Tuesday, September 13, in Ryhope Community Centre at 1.30pm. Speaker will be Jack Curtis on Living History. All are welcome to go along.

Tunstall WI will resume after its summer break this Thursday 7pm at North Street Methodist Church, Silksworth. The WI Federation Choir will entertain and the competition is an amusing photo. Congratulations and best wishes were sent to member Olwyn Watts, who celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends at Beckwith Mews. Members enjoyed the annual trip to The Milkhope Centre and Carlisle with many thanks to Sheila Cassidy for organising it. Some members are now looking forward to the Federation trips to Harrogate on Thursday, September 15, and the Yarndale Festival at Skipton on Saturday, September 24. Visitors are most welcome to visit the WI at any time.

A knitting group meets on the second Saturday of each month in North Street Methodist Church, Silksworth, from 10am to noon. New members are welcome. You can take along your own knitting or help knit for charity. The next meeting is this Saturday.

Ryhope Engines Museum has participated in every Heritage Open Day event since its inception in 1994 and this year will be no exception. The museum will be open free as usual for a special steaming, to help celebrate this year’s national event. It will be open between 11am and 4pm this Saturday and Sunday.

Other events nearby are St Nicholas’s Church, Queen Alexandra Road, which will be open this Friday from 2pm to 4pm and on Saturday from 10am to 3pm, and The Royalty Theatre will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. For more information, ring Janet Robinson on 0191 561 8413

As part of National Heritage Weekend, Silksworth Heritage Group is presenting an evening of Silksworth Memories in Silksworth Comrades Club, Athol Grove, this Friday from 7pm to 10pm. All are welcome.

A charity Compton Organ Concert in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care will be presented in Ryhope Community Centre on Sunday, September 18, at 2.30pm. Ryhope Pentecostal Church’s next Ladies’ Fellowship will be this Saturday at 2pm. The speaker will be Sandra Flounders and there will be

refreshments afterwards. All are welcome.
