Shocking pictures show damage to Sunderland home after fire spreads from car

Twelve firefighters were called to a Sunderland street in the early hours of Wednesday, December 4 following a car blaze which spread to a cottage.

Crews from Sunderland Central and Marley Park stations attended Grafton Street in Millfield at around 2.15am on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a Land Rover Freelander was destroyed by fire – but that the blaze had spread to an end-of-terrace cottage.

Three people had escaped from the house prior to the crews’ arrival and were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

They were then taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital as a precaution.

The property’s front door suffered fire damage, while the ground floor of the two-storey cottage was damaged by smoke.

Firefighters used two hose reels, one breathing apparatus and a positive pressure ventilation fan to bring the blaze under control.
