Crews from Sunderland Central and Marley Park stations attended Grafton Street in Millfield at around 2.15am on Wednesday.
A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a Land Rover Freelander was destroyed by fire – but that the blaze had spread to an end-of-terrace cottage.

They were then taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital as a precaution.
The property’s front door suffered fire damage, while the ground floor of the two-storey cottage was damaged by smoke.
Firefighters used two hose reels, one breathing apparatus and a positive pressure ventilation fan to bring the blaze under control.
