Shadow Minister urges Sunderland voters to back EU membership
A senior Labour politician hit the streets of Wearside today, urging voters to keep the UK in the EU.
Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary Lisa Nandy MP joined Houghton and Sunderland South Bridget Phillipson for a spot of doorstep campaigning in Gilley Law.
“It has been pretty positive,” she said.
“Quite a lot of people have already voted but a lot of people, I think are still making up their minds.
“The North East has benefitted tremendously over the year from inward investment by the likes of Nissan, Hitachi and Komatsu - all businesses attracted to the UK because of the access it gives them to the single market. To come out of the EU would be to put all that at risk.”
Bridget Phillipson is in no doubt about the importance of the vote on June 23: “Jobs, wages and workers’ rights are all at stake,” she said.
“This will be the most important decision that we take for a generation.”
