This coming Saturday and Sunday, St Mary the Virgin Church, Old Seaham, will be open during the Heritage Weekend from 10am to 4pm. The building is one of just 20 pre-Viking churches in the country and well worth the visit. The church nave is Saxon with seven windows; the chancel and tower are in the Norman period with the porch and vestry added later. The pulpit is Elizabethan and the pew Georgian. The parish has links with George, Lord Byron who married into the Milbanke family.

Services at Christ Church, new Seaham, are: Wednesday, 10am Holy Communion. Sunday, morning prayer at 10am and Holy Communion at 6pm. On Sunday at 9.15am Holy Communion will be celebrated at St Andrew’s, Dalton-le-Dale.

The next meeting of Christ Church Mothers’ Union will be on Monday, September 12, at 2pm after the annual Opening Church Service of the MU.
