Vergini is back in his homeland to put the finishing touches to a three-year deal at Boca after Sunderland agreed a fee for the defender earlier this week - thought to be around the £1.5million mark.

The 27-year-old is due to complete his medical today, before putting pen to paper on his contract with the Argentina giants.

“It is a great joy and I’m very excited. I hope to complete the move smoothly,” he told the Argentina media.

“I want to come and add something to the group, and contribute what I can.”

There was no prospect of Vergini getting a second opportunity at Sunderland after the prospect of a permanent move to Getafe fell through when the Spanish side were relegated from La Liga last season.

Sunderland will recoup the bulk of the £2m that they were forced to spend on the centre-half last summer, under the terms of his loan spell from the previous season.

The Black Cats will also save wages of around £20,000 a week, to represent the first success in Sam Allardyce’s attempts to offload the deadwood this summer.

Unwanted quintet Liam Bridcutt, Will Buckley, Jordi Gomez, Adam Matthews and Charis Mavrias are all due to return for the start of pre-season training on Monday, with Emanuele Giaccherini still involved with Italy at the European Championships.

As the Echo revealed earlier this week, Gomez is attracting attention from his former club Espanyol, with 12 months remaining on his Sunderland contract.
