Santas on the run to help boost charity

A new running group will be spreading Christmas cheer for charity as they pound the pavement dressed as Santa.

Washington Harriers, which formed earlier this year, will cap off a successful first year with a Christmas fun run on Sunday for charity Hope 4 Kids.

The keen runners who meet on Thursday nights and Sunday mornings to train, will kick off from Biddick Academy, in Biddick Lane, at 11am and run through Washington Village and up to Concord, and back through the village.

The runners, who will be dressed as Santa, elves and Christmas trees, will finish off the event with refreshments at the Cross Keys pub, in Spout Lane.

Angie Rathbone from Barmston, who runs the group along with Jo Mitchison, said about 40 runners are expected to take part.

“We have also invited members of the Sunderland Strollers to take part,” Ms Rathbone said.

“We have runners aged between 24 years old and 66 years old. It’s going really well and starting to build up a bit more.

“On Sunday we have people dressing up as Christmas trees and Santas for an optional donation of £2.”
