SAFC 10 YEARS AGO: Come back Superkev!

Here's what the Echo was reporting on SAFC on this day 10 years ago.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 2006

GET KEV! Stephen Elliott would welcome the arrival of Kevin Phillips at the Stadium of Light even though it would increase competition for the Irishman up front.

Sunderland manager Niall Quinn this week revealed that he hoped to bring Super Kev back to Wearside.

Now that Aston Villa have appointed Martin O’Neill as manager, Quinn will soon ask if Phillips can be bought.

ELLIOTT GETS A MONTH: Sunderland have given Robbie Elliott a month to prove he is worth a longer stay at the Stadium of Light.

The 32-year-old has signed a short-term deal after doing well in a trial with the Black Cats, during which time he played in friendlies against Carlisle United an South Korea Under-20s.

Elliott is a free agent and could make his Sunderland debut in tomorrow’s season-opening trip to Coventy City.

STEVE: I’D LOVE TO BE SKIPPER. Steve Caldwell would love to be Sunderland’s new captain.

Manager Niall Quinn says he’s still making up his mind about who should be his leader on the pitch.

New signing Kenny Cunningham would be an obvious candidate but Cadlwell has had the honour in the past.

ON SUNDAY: Losing culture must end, says Quinn. Murphy gutted by defeat.
