Sunderland hosted its first Go Dad Run event today, inviting men and boys to pull on a pair of pants over their kit as they completed a 5k or 10k route starting from Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre.

The event was led by Olympic hurdler Colin Jackson, who has teamed up with Prostate Cancer UK to hold a series of the runs across the country after two of his uncles suffered with prostate cancer.

The team behind it hope the events will emulate the success of the all-women Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Wearside’s runs was supported by Everyone Act, which manages the Silksworth centre on behalf of the council.

All registered runners received a chip timing service to log their finishing time, a t-shirt and a big pair of blue y-fronts to wear over their shorts, as well as a sports bag and medal after they crossed the closing line.
