The incident happened at around 12.30pm on Saturday (October 22) on the A1 Northbound between J61 at Durham (A688/A177) and J62 at Sunderland (A690).

Two out of three lanes were closed and traffic had to use the hard shoulder past the scene of the collision, as motorists faced delays of up to 30 minutes and four miles of congestion.

National Highways confirmed just after 2pm that all lanes had reopened.

Durham Constabulary has been contacted for a comment.
