Road reopens after air ambulance takes elderly driver to hospital following Sunderland crash

A busy Sunderland has reopened after an air ambulance transported a patient to hospital following a crash involving a car and a bus.

The A1290 Washington Road was closed off in both directions on Friday, March 13, following a crash near the junction with Hylton Lane at around 10.45am, with an elderly driver treated at the scene.

It was reopened by Northumbria Police by 3.30pm.

The Great North Air Ambulance landed at 11.17am and transported a patient to hospital.

Pictures show damage to both the car and the bus as emergency services respond to the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman told the Echo shortly after the incident: “At about 10.45am we received a report of a collision between a bus and a car on Washington Road in Sunderland.

Emergency services attended and the elderly driver is currently being treated by paramedics at the scene.

“Nobody on the bus is believed to have been seriously injured but the road is currently closed as emergency services deal with the incident.”

North East Ambulance Service sent three Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), two double-crewed ambulances and a specialist paramedic, with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service also attending.

Buses were also diverted following the accident.

The Go North East 56 was unable to serve stops on Washington Road and passengers were asked to catch the bus from Hepworth and Grandage or Bunny Hill medical centre.
