Sunderland fans have had their say as to who they want to be their new manager.

We've been running a poll this week on who supporters would like to see replace Chris Coleman in the Black Cats' hotseat.

More than 1,300 readers have cast their vote as to which of the bookies' favourites they would prefer as the new boss, with Stewart Donald set to complete his takeover from Ellis Short.

And Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has emerged as the man you would like to see in the dugout for the first game of the new season.

Wilder polled 36% of the vote, with the experience of the Blades boss - who took United to the League One title last season, and then to the verge of the Championship play-offs this term - an attraction.

He pipped Mick McCarthy in the voting, the ex-Sunderland manager second with 30%.

In fact, Appleton polled the equal least number of votes from the five candidates, along with Wigan chief Paul Cook, with Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips getting 22%.

Wilder would seem an excellent choice, with his good track record at places like Oxford, Northampton and Sheffield United, though tempting him from his boyhood team - even though he is disgruntled with the ongoing boardroom power struggle at Bramall Lane - might not be easy.

The Echo understands that Wilder and Appleton are under consideration by Donald as he draws up a shortlist, but that other names are in the frame.
