But to obtain a UK passport, applicants need to pass the ‘Life in the UK’ test - answering 24 questions on British customs, politics and history in 45 minutes.

Dubbed as “a bad pub quiz” by one university academic, the £50 test - which must be sat in London and requires a 75 per cent pass mark - is nonetheless what decides whether the passport applicant is “British enough” to stay here.
