Pupils create mosaic to show their place in the world

The children, staff and parents at Woodlea Primary School have taken part in a community project, paid for by the Big Lottery Fund, to create an 8ft by 8ft mosaic.

Artist Susan Warlock worked with each class at the Houghton school to come up with ideas for the design.

She compiled them to make panels which fit together, showing Chester-le-Street, the North East, the UK, the world and Woodlea Primary, which has pride of place 
as the centrepiece in the design.

More than 300 staff, pupils and members of the community have put pieces into the mosaic, which is now going on display in the school hall.

Heateacher Philip Adamson said: “The whole school community worked with Susan Warlock to generate ideas of what should be included in the finished design. Once the design was finalised, every child in the school took part in workshops, where they 
were able to add tiles to the mosaic.”

The overall theme for the mosaic was Our Woodlea World.

Mr Adamson, said: “I’m delighted with the progress of our fabulous mosaic.

“The design really helps the children understand that our world is made up of many different communities and they have a role to play in each one.

“The whole project has been a lot of fun and the children have enjoyed it tremendously.”
