Popular city centre restaurant announces its sudden closure in 'big decision'
The popular restaurant in a prime location has been running for almost ten years.
One of Sunderland’s most popular independent restaurants has announced its sudden closure in what the team says is “devastating for us all.”

Mexico 70 in High Street West, which has a good reputation for its tacos including a strong vegan offering, said it had to close a fortnight ago and was contacting anyone with bookings.
There was no statement as to why, just that they couldn’t open the doors “until further notice,” but that they hadn’t “thrown in the towel.” It was expected they would reopen soon.
However, today, October 23, a statement was posted saying goodbye.
It reads: “Making this post has been devastating for us all, but we have to say goodbye.
“The past almost 9 years have been class, we definitely made the right choice to reopen back in 2024. We’ve made good memories, reunited with our OG customers and met many more new customers along the way.

“We want to say a massive thank you for coming in on our Taco Tuesday, drinking the best margs in Sunderland at our famous Mex Lates and for choosing us to be apart of your evenings. We wouldn’t have got as far as we have without our hardworking staff, who show up every day and have made Mex 2.0.”
The restaurant had changed to a burger place briefly in 2024 but decided to reopen as Mexico 70 due to its popularity and since re-established itself as a firm favourite for food and its music nights.
Many took to social media to express their sadness at the closure.
DJs from Loud Not Loud said: “Truly gutted for guys. We loved playing records for Mex70 and being part of the late sessions. We had some great nights. Loved the last two New Year’s Eves, which were mega. Wishing you all the best for the next steps.”
It’s still not clear as to exactly why it has closed.
However, those who are fans of its food can visit the new sister site Atletico 70, which recently opened at Ashbrooke Sports Club, serving tacos, burritos, rice bowls and more.
Nearby Koji also recently closed its doors, leaving two prime restaurants opposite the Empire empty.
