Sunderland on the One Show - Ed Balls comes to city to discover the original Washington

Tonight’s One Show will take a trip to Sunderland as Ed Balls looks at the differences between our Washington and the US capital which takes its name.

The programme will today, Tuesday, November 3, broadcast the last in a series of three special films made by the presenter and former politician, looking at the differences between the UK and US elections and exploring how the result might affect people in the UK.

Shot in Washington and in Sunderland, the former shadow chancellor and home secretary will use his decade-long experience as an MP as he seeks the views of Mackems on the most recent gaffs and triumphs of the election candidates, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden.

He also asks Washington residents their thoughts on the two, and gets them to vote in his street-side ballot-box before revealing the result of the ‘other’ Washington vote as they decide who will come out on top.

It comes on the final day of the campaign, with the programme picking Wearside as a location thanks to the first president of the United States, George Washington, with Washington Old Hall the family home of his ancestors.

Mr Balls has previously featured in ITV News Election Night coverage in both 2017 and 2019, and headed up the BBC documentary series Travels in Trumpland.

He said: “This US election campaign, like the Donald Trump Presidency, has been fascinating, unpredictable and often totally wild.

"But the outcome will have huge implications for America and the rest of the world.

"I’m really looking forward to sharing all the twists and turns of the Presidential debates, the insults and multi-million dollar adverts, with the One Show audience.

"I hope we’ll be able to make sense of what’s going on and see why it matters to us here in the UK too.”

The programme will air at 7pm on BBC One and will be available to watch again on the iPlayer following the broadcast.
