The first designs will be considered during Sunderland City Council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday, November 17 and a report will be examined to being the search for a contractor to finalise the design and begin construction.

As part of a commitment to sustainability within the Riverside project, the initial plans show that 15 per cent of the spaces will be for electric vehicles and that it operate outside of normal working hours, to support the evening economy in the city centre.

It is hoped that the car park will also help to maximise and progress development opportunities at Riverside Sunderland – including the approved plans for two new major office sites.

Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Graeme Miller said: "Riverside is part of our City Plan for a more dynamic, healthy and vibrant Sunderland as we work with our development partners on continuing to create new homes, more jobs, new investment, securing further business growth and attracting more visitors."

"This new car park will serve home owners and workers at new housing and office developments, city visitors and increase our city centre’s parking capacity."
