Easington voted by 65.96% to leave the EU in 2016’s referendum and has been a Labour stronghold since 1922.

Mrs Maughan, 53, describes herself as an ordinary woman who believes in democracy and is passionate about helping to improve people’s prospects in the constituency.

She is a retired worker with the fire service in Sunderland and is married with three children.

Mrs Maughan was born in a miner's cottage in Silksworth and was brought up by her single mother after her father died of cancer when she was just two.

She said: “I’m the daughter of a miner from a North East pit village, and I’m steeped in the issues and the problems faced by this area.

“This area has suffered from years of under investment and lack of opportunities across the board.

“The constituency of Easington occupies a great stretch of the northeast coast so let’s harness that geographical advantage to create free ports and bring jobs and industry back to our region.”

The other candidates standing in Easington are: Clare Ambrosino (Conservative), Dominic John Haney (Liberal Democrats), Susan McDonnell (The North East Party), and Grahame Mark Morris (Labour).
