Voters are due to head to polling stations on Thursday, May 6, to re-elect or replace the holders of 28 seats on Sunderland City Council.

Bidding for the prize in St Chad’s are:

Chris BURNICLE (Conservative Party Candidate)

I am married with two young children and have lived in Sunderland my whole life.

I work in the city as a director of a local business, so I fully understand the hardship of the business community within Sunderland.

I care deeply about children’s mental health and believe that we should do more to support this.

I benefited from the support of a good boxing club in my youth and, if elected, I would like to ensure more children can get involved in groups that will support their growth.

Over the last two years, I have campaigned on issues like cutting speeding and stopping fly-tipping, and I’ve completed multiple litter picks.

I take a proactive approach to improving our ward.

If I am elected, I would like to push for harsher punishments for fly-tipping and improvements to mental health support.

Elizabeth Agnes CROSBY (Liberal Democrat)

I am standing in this election as I would like to contribute to the scrutiny the councillors give the local NHS.

I feel that older people get a bad deal.

Their problems are put on the back burner and forgotten about, and when their turn finally comes, the care they receive is often inadequate.

My 78-year-old friend was sent for a chiropody appointment and the building she was told to report to turned out to be the VD clinic – it didn’t do her feet any good, but we laughed for three weeks.

Still, it needs sorting!

I think that the council does not listen to local people in St. Chads ward, who want to protect the local environment; from picking up litter to trying to build on our green areas.

We need our green areas to find serenity, and for families to use them for recreation, not unwanted houses.

I also want more action on dog waste.

Darryl Oliver DIXON (Labour Party)

I live in the ward I represent.

St Chad’s is made up of very distinct communities.

I pledge to remain accessible and respond positively to the varying views of residents.

We all want to make the best of where we live.

Sunderland has been hit disproportionately hard by government austerity than some more affluent Conservative controlled parts of the country.

We have to make more with less and this is the task councillors take on.

By self-help we will continue to attract investment in the city and drive forward regeneration.

This is showing in the town centre.

Good to see plans to rebuild Farringdon Secondary school.

The relocation of the Sunderland Eye Infirmary is a magnificent municipal initiative.

My personal agenda includes more active policing, mre social housing, better social care and the improvement of our schools.
