Sunderland's Hylton Road reopens - these are the next closures as phase three of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor takes shape

The £70.8million project will create a route through Pallion, running underneath the Queen Alexandra Bridge, onto Deptford and into the city centre.

Works on SSTC phase three started last year and continued during the coronavirus lockdown – with council chiefs seeing massive progress due to falling traffic levels.

Sunderland City Council have now announced details of the next phase of works with planned changes to traffic routes around Deptford, Hylton and St Mary’s.

From the afternoon of Friday, September 11, Hylton Road will reopen following its closure at the end of July.

At the same time, the new link road between Carol Street and the A1231 will be closed to allow construction of the new carriageway on Trimdon Street West.

This ties into Pallion New Road and the new Trimdon Junction (formerly the Tarmac plant and Simpson Street).

A signed diversion will be in place via Deptford Road and Hylton Road and the works will be carried out under two-way lights, which will be in place between September 21 and December 18.

As the Hylton Roundabout currently has five approaches, an enlargement of the inner ring is also needed.

From September 26, the roundabout will be modified so “it no longer operates as a full roundabout.”

A council statement goes on to say: “To safely construct the works, road users exiting Farringdon Row onto Hylton Roundabout are only able to turn left (eastbound).

“Road users wishing to travel westbound from Farringdon Row, should travel to St Mary’s roundabout and travel west.”

When completed, SSTC 3 aims to improve connectivity in and around the city centre, alongside reducing congestion and boosting road safety.

Further improvements on Wessington Way, between the A19 and north end of the Northern Spire and improvements to routes into the Port of Sunderland, are planned for later phases of the SSTC subject to future funding.
