Roads to close for up to six weeks to allow for construction work for the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor (Phase 3)

In recent months, construction work started on the third phase of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor (SSTC).

When completed, the £70.8million council project will create a route through Pallion, running underneath the Queen Alexandra Bridge, into Deptford and onto the city centre and St Mary’s Boulevard.

Contractors Esh Civils sent an update letter to residents living near the planned works.

From July 22, two-way traffic lights will be put in place on Carol Street for around six months.

This will allow the construction of a new link between Carol Street and Pallion New Road.

On July 29, gas diversion works taking place along Alliance Place will also enter the Hylton roundabout, with access closed to vehicles on Hylton Road between the roundabout and Deptford Road.

The Railway Row access to the Hylton Road roundabout will also be closed during the works.

Utility works are expected to take up to six weeks with site working between Monday-Friday and potentially some weekend working.

Sunderland City Council has previously said the SSTC aims to reduce congestion and improve journey times and road safety in the long-term.

The letter from Esh Civils adds: “We realise that a certain amount of disruption could be caused during the work and assure you that we will use our best endeavours to ensure that the impact to you/your home is kept to a minimum.”

Phase three of the project is estimated to be completed by autumn 2021.
