LIVE: Sunderland City Council elections 2024

Key Events

  • All results for the Sunderland City Council elections are now in
  • Labour has claimed gains, with opposition groups facing losses
  • Reform UK are hailing success after beating the Tories in most seats, but the party lost its only Sunderland councillor
  • Counts will take place on Friday for the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner and North East mayor

The Green Party has stood candidates across the majority of wards in the city this year and are looking to regain a seat at the table on Sunderland City Council.

The Green Party’s first and sole representative on the council Dom Armstrong resigned as a councillor in 2021 after clashing with the party nationally, and the Green Party have not won a city council seat since.

Washington South Councillor Paul Donaghy was elected as a Conservative before defecting to Reform UK in early 2023.

He is also Reform UK’s candidate in this year’s elections for the new North East Mayoral Combined Authority.

Reform UK stood local election candidates across Sunderland last year and are looking to gain more seats on the city council in 2024, with candidates standing in every ward.

Ballot boxes arriving at the Sunderland Tennis Centre

Sunderland’s impressive election team are world famous, and rightly so!

When the first result might come

“Not sure when the first result is expected but based on last year's Sunderland count, we could be looking at after 11pm” - reporter Chris Binding at the count.

Mayor and Crime Commissioner results - Friday 03/05

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the results for the North East Mayor are expected in by 12pm, and the crime commissioner by 4.30pm - but that’s subject to how long any recounts may take, and any other issues.

Sorting the colours

Voters had three ballot slips today, one for each of the polls taking place.

They all went in the same ballot boxes, and counters are now having to sort them all before even starting to count the votes!
