Sunderland City Council’s ruling cabinet discussed proposals to maintain and improve several structures on the A182 at a virtual meeting on June 16.

The project includes re-waterproofing, concrete repairs and the replacement of steel beams on two road bridges at the Princess Anne Interchange at the junction with the A195.

Steel beams at the Bonemill Lane Interchange Bridge are also set for a new paint job as part of the works.

In addition, re-waterproofing, concrete repairs, drainage repairs and steel parapet replacements are planned at the two footbridges and subway north of Bonemill Lane.

The plans form ‘phase two’ of an ongoing maintenance project on the A182.

According to a report prepared for councillors, failing to carry out the works would see “the condition of the bridges deteriorate, leading to increased cost of future repair and increased safety risk to the public.”

Senior councillors approved the scheme at a virtual meeting which was broadcast live on YouTube in line with social distancing guidelines.

Sunderland City Council leaders also agreed to launch the process of appointing a contractor for the bridge works.

Deputy council leader with responsibility for environment and transport, Coun Michael Mordey, said the project is planned between the months of January and March next year.

Costs will be met from the council’s Bridge Maintenance Investment Programme within the current capital programme of the council’s budget.
