A major project to repair bridges on the Washington Highway is set to take a step forward as council bosses start the process of appointing a contractor.

Sunderland City Council’s ruling cabinet will be asked to approve ‘phase two’ of a bridge maintenance project on the A182.

According to a report prepared for councillors, the move is part of the council’s legal duty to maintain the highway.

Failing to carry out the works would see “the condition of the bridges deteriorate, leading to increased cost of future repair and increased safety risk to the public.”

The project includes re-waterproofing, concrete repairs and the replacement of steel beams at the two road bridges at Princess Anne Interchange at the junction with the A195.

Steel beams at the Bonemill Lane Interchange Bridge are also set for a new paint job.

Works are also planned at the two footbridges and subway north of Bonemill Lane.

Costs for the works will be met from the council’s Bridge Maintenance Investment Programme within the current capital programme.

Council bosses will be asked to approve the works and to authorise the process to appoint a contractor.

A report to cabinet adds that emergency services, bus operators and nearby residents and businesses will be informed of the temporary traffic management measures necessary to carry out the works.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the city council’s cabinet has started to meet remotely with meetings live-streamed on the council’s YouTube channel.
