The Johnson Building is a two-storey pre-fabricated building and sits near the University of Sunderland’s Design Centre on its City Campus, which straddles Chester Road.

Earlier in December 2020, a ‘prior approval’ application was lodged with Sunderland City Council to remove the building.

According to planning documents, it has been in place for more than 25 years and was originally approved as a teaching facility.

A covering letter submitted on behalf of the university states the building is “no longer required to service students or staff.”

Council planners are expected to rule on the application by early 2021.

Subject to approval and other consents, the work is expected to start on February 1 2020.
