Sunderland City Council has approved a planning application for the Bryony Park Nursing Home, at the corner of Thompson Road and Carley Hill Road in Southwick.

This included a two-storey rear extension at the building to provide eight extra bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms.

In a decision report, planners said the extension would be set back from the boundaries of the site to prevent the structure being “overdominant and obtrusive.”

The report went on to say: “The proposal has been assessed as being unlikely to result in any serious detriment to the visual amenities of the area and will provide a good level of amenity for the prospective residents.

“The development is not likely to cause unacceptable harm to trees in and outside of the site, and it is acceptable in terms of highway safety and land contamination issues.”

Bryony Park Nursing Home has an overall rating of ‘Good’ from care watchdogs, the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

During the most recent CQC visit in November 2017, inspectors also rated the service as ‘Outstanding’ for care.

Memory Lane Care Homes Ltd run the site, which was built in 1999, providing services for those who require personal care or nursing care in the Sunderland area.

This can include elderly care for those with dementia, disorders or injuries.

Council planning officers consulted with various agencies and invited views from members of the public before a decision was made on the plans.
