Last week, Sunderland City Council verified plans from Adderstone (212) Ltd for a vacant industrial building in the Ryhope ward.

The unit, off Toll Bar Road near B&M stores, was formerly the home of Storey Carpets.

Under a ‘change of use’ bid from developers , it could soon reopen as a gym creating up to 14 full-time jobs.

If approved, around 33 parking spaces and five disability bays would also be available for customers.

A planning assessment, submitted to the council, states the scheme would benefit the area.

It reads: “It is considered that granting planning permission for this change of use would allow an existing vacant unit to be occupied for use which would be compatible with the surrounding area and would represent sustainable development in providing a business which encourages healthy lifestyles and which would create job opportunities.”

The report adds that the site was chosen after considering alternative buildings in Ryhope, Grangetown, Silksworth and Hendon.

A final decision on the gym plan is expected by Wednesday, March 11 following a period of council consultation.
