Plans for more than 100 homes on the former site of North Hylton College have been given the green light.

The land has been unused since the facility closed in 2016, with pupils and teachers moved to Sunderland College’s Park Lane campus, in the city centre, and the now vacant buildings are said to be in an ‘increasingly poor state of repair’.

But the space between North Hylton Road and Redcar Road, could now be used for 105 properties, including 14 bungalows, all of which will be ‘affordable’, with a mixture of ‘affordable rent and Rent to Buy’ offers expected to be put on the market.

An application by Karbon Homes, a housing association with more than 30,000 properties on its books across the North East and Yorkshire, was approved by Sunderland City Council’s Development Control Panel for North Sunderland on December 17.

Conservative opposition councillor James Doyle said: “It is very encouraging that it is 100 per cent affordable provision, which is a bit of a rarity, so I think it’s a great application.”

Coun Julia Jackson, who chairs the committee, added: “Bungalows are something we desperately need to see in Sunderland so it’s a really positive application for our city and residents.”

The site is jointly owned by the city council and Sunderland College.

Council bosses agreed to put the land up for development in October in 2018.

Karbon Homes is also expected to agree to agree to hand over £395,583 towards the cost of education services in the city following yesterday’s decision.
