But who remembers the long journey which went beforehand – when a legion of Wearsiders headed for London and had the best day out ever.

For hours, Sunderland fans left the North East in their droves – by train, coach, car and any other way they could think of.

Here are some of those supporters getting ready for what would turn out to be the biggest day in the club’s history for decades to come.
