That was the spark for jubilant scenes in Sunderland as a pictures show.

Among those watching the game on the big screen in a good-natured atmosphere were friends Daryl Miles-Roper and Alan Share, from Sunderland.

Daryl, who says he is cheering on both England and Romania in the tournament, having lived in the eastern European country for 11 years, said: "A draw would have been a fair result but I am glad England won.

"Wales can take heart from their performance as well and I think both teams will still qualify."

Alan added: "It was brilliant to watch it with a big crowd because it was a great atmosphere.

"It was a great moment when the winning goal went in. I was pleased for manager Roy Hodgson for getting his substitutions right."

Another spectator, Steve Cutter, said: "I thought England deserved to win because they were the better team. They should really have six points now as they should have held on to win against Russia.

Ray Matthews said: "I'm very pleased England won but I cannot see them getting beyond the quarter finals. Although they played well they still don't seem to flow going forward or bring their Premier League form to the international stage."

The win now leaves England top of their group going into the next match against Slovakia on Monday night knowing a victory guarantee their place in the last 16.
