Sunderland's Tom Flanagan challenges for the ball.

Our Sunderland writer Phil Smith has dished out his player ratings - scroll down and flick through our galley to see his verdict.

Nothing he could do about Kinsellas stunning strike. First half stop to deny Gordon was brilliant. A goal looked nailed on. 6
Some good runs forward but none of the trademark delivery into the box. Unlikely to have done enough to dislodge Reece James this weekend. 5
Some crucial covering challenges in the second half but was often guilty of giving the ball away too easily. 6

Defensively OK but didnt use the ball anywhere near well enough. Both he and Baldwin looked fatigued after a long run in the team. 5
Not able to make much of an impression going forward. Struggled against the livelier wing threat but always going to be tough playing so out of position. 5
Didnt affect the game much going forward but one of the few to look after the ball. Some good defensive moments. 6
Lacked his normal pose on the ball. Didnt move it as quickly or as accurately as supporters have become accustomed to. 5
Industrious and made some good runs in the first half, but couldnt produce any attacking inspiration in the second. 5
Very poor in the first half but did more than anyone to try and create something in the second. Perhaps an inevitable dip giving how much football has he played. 5
Some really good runs into space and came close with one second half effort that was turned wide. A solid and encouraging return. 6
Just one of those nights where nothing came off for him. Lost the ball countless times and couldnt make the most of his opportunity to start. 4
Returned from his injury lay-off and was well off the pace. Poor use of the ball was very uncharacteristic. 5
A couple of neat touches but little service from those behind him. 6
Little time to make an impact. N/A
